How To Have A Great 50th Birthday

Having fun is greatly dependent upon one’s attitude. If that attitude has a bit of denial-of-reality in it, your fiftieth birthday can be wonderful! For example, my brother-in-law is a few years younger than my husband – who’s my age (minus a couple of months).
I’d asked my husband, “How old is your brother now?”
Earl replied, “About 47.”
“47! That’s pretty old, isn’t it?” I said in shock. Then a big pause as I tried to interpret the weird look from husband.
“Oh!” I exclaimed as realization dawned. “I don’t know why I thought I was still 34.”

I still don’t know why I’m perpetually stuck at 34 years old in my head, but I enjoyed my birthday to the fullest. That’s why, when we went to the beach over my Birthday Day weekend, I had a total blast. We were lucky enough to afford a room with a view of the ocean in a nice resort. It was a dream come true. This was the first year we’ve splurged on an ocean view room.

The moon rising over the sea was mesmerizing.

Golden Umbrellas by the beach

The Dayton resort consisted 3 buildings. When we walked along the beach we could find our buildings by the golden umbrellas. We swam in the indoor and outdoor pools, as well as the lazy river, and soaked in the spa. During the day, the hotel staff would set out chairs with umbrellas right on the beach strand. It was very inviting!

We had drinks in a local sports bar. We experienced the flavor of the Boardwalk at the Beach. We dined one evening at Benjamin’s Calabash in N. Myrtle Beach. The food was delicious and worth the price. And we went parasailing!

Parasailing

We were tugged out to the boat from shore, and back, with a jet ski lashed to a long sausage shaped rubber raft. We had to straddle the rubber sausage raft and sit on our knees while holding onto a rope for dear life. It was a great rush of fun hitting the swells. Then at the boat, we had to climb on, gear up, and get attached to the boat and sail and we were flying high. So quiet and peaceful – it felt like a zen moment of time. Every moment felt wondrous.

I’m not a big adventure person, but this was great fun. I was very saddened when two young ladies refused to take their turn and parasail. Earl and I tried to tell them that the scariest part was the raft ride to the boat. But their faces were petrified into stone chiseled fear. I felt sorry for them that their fear consumed them. Then I remembered it was my 50th birthday, and I was thankful I could still be brave, young, and living life to the fullest.
